Astana Prepares for New Year’s Celebration

December is one of the most magical months of the year, when cities around the world get decorated for Christmas and the New Year. Numerous festivities and fun outdoors activities are some of the attributes of the season’s celebration.

Kazakhstan’s capital Astana set the bar high with its last year’s festivities. The 2016’s New Year was marked with grandiose firework at the bank of the Essil river and in front of Khan Shatyr Shopping Mall. Festive programs were organized at the square near the municipal administration and in ice towns.

This year won’t be exception. Residents and guests of Astana will witness 17 trees and four ice towns ahead of the 2017 New Year holidays. Astana will also feature ice slides and frozen sculptures.

An extensive holiday program is prepared specifically for kids. For example, Zhastar Palace invites children to take part in New Year festivities Dec. 23-30. Ticket prices can vary from 1,500 tenge (US$4.50) to 2,000 tenge (US$5.90). In addition, the Dobroye Serdtce (Kind Heart) fairy tale village will open from Dec. 19-30 in Zhastar Palace.

New Year’s celebrations will culminate Dec. 31 on the city’s square and the square near the Khan Shatyr Mall. Festivities will last from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m.

A New Year tree lighting ceremony will take place near Khan Shatyr Mall Dec. 18. Traditionally, this event is held with the participation of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.
