It is a very special year for Almaty, because it marks a major milestone in the history of Kazakhstan’s former capital. This September Almaty celebrates its 1,000th birthday.
The city will be celebrating it with various festivals and concerts throughout the month. However the main festivity was held on September 18, when President Nazarbayev congratulated the residents of Almaty on the anniversary. The evening was also capped off with a fireworks show called Apple Fire that was launched in three locations of the city.
“This date has been included in UNESCO’s calendar of commemorative and anniversary dates of humanity, which emphasizes the unique role of Almaty in regional and global development,” said the President during his greeting speech.
Earlier that day, the Almafest 2016 apple festival kicked off in the Park of the First President. Also, Almaty’s Ice Palace hosted a concert titled “Twenty five peaks of Almaty.” Kazakh music concert “Gakku Dauysy,” Art Energy festival and many other events are taking place in the beautiful city of Almaty this month.
Of course, the city’s anniversary is a wonderful reason to have fun and enjoy the festivities, but it is also an important reminder of the long history and rich heritage of Almaty. According to the Institute of Archaeology in Almaty, first human settlements in the area of the city were built a millennium ago. The discovered artifacts prove that the history of Almaty dates back to the Paleolithic era.
